Weaving Stories: Tartan Workshop with Radical Weavers

We recently had the pleasure of running a six-week “Weave Your Own Tartan” workshop with Sophie from Radical Weavers – and what a success it was!

Over the course of the programme, five women came together to learn not only the practical skills of weaving, but also the rich history behind tartan and its place in Scotland’s cultural heritage. From their first introduction to the loom to designing and creating their own unique tartans, the group embraced the experience with creativity, curiosity, and enthusiasm.

For many, the workshop was about more than learning a new craft. It became a space for connection, discovery, and cultural exchange. Participants reflected on what the experience meant to them:

“Thank you for the opportunity to go through the course. For me it was not just a lesson but a real immersion in the world of history of Scotland, English and art.”

“Thank you for sharing your passion for Scottish weaving with us. Tartan is the fabric of a nation and now I carry a piece of it with me. It meant a lot.”

“Thank you for introducing me to the wonderful art of tartan weaving, for the fact that I was able to make a piece of canvas for myself. I am pleased that in Scotland they honour and preserve their traditions and that you share the secrets of craftsmanship with everyone who is interested.”

We’re so proud of what the group achieved and grateful to Sophie for guiding everyone through such a meaningful journey. Workshops like these are a wonderful way to bring people together, celebrate culture, and create something lasting – both in fabric and in memory.

We look forward to offering more opportunities like this in the future!
